The gently traipsing rhythm section supports a lilting melody reminiscent of early Neil Young in the first track, "California (Inn or Out)". Dall's distinctive voice goes from quivering whisper to fragile falsetto to steady harmonies layered with the harmonies of Sally Charmers. Live favourite "Like Other Birds" is next with its quaint, almost clumsy yet never sloppy waltz beat. "Candi's Coating" is a low-key, jazzy number which fades, only to be jarred out of its sleep by the straight-ahead roots rock of "Waste - Deep and Blue" which stumbles to its improvised conclusion to be followed by the concluding track, a mellow acoustic number. Dall is an energetic live performer yet also prolific in the studio, this being his fourth CD release in almost as many years. This CD effectively demonstrates the variety in his material and his accomplished songwriting skills. Now that he has returned to Ottawa, Dall is quickly staking his claim alongside the growing wave of contemporary Ottawa singer-songwriters like Kathleen Edwards, Jim Bryson and Danny Michel. Even if Michel isn't technically in Ottawa any more.
