I get an email. "I WILL KILL YOU!" It says, " If you don't buy American Football I will kill you while you lie sleeping with your wife!" It's from my friend Simon. "Gee wiz!" I think, Jenn and I aren't even legally married and I'm about to get rubbed out. So I make my way down to the Black Tomato as quick as I can and pick up the CD. As it turns out it's quite lovely, melodic and poppy without being too predictable. Before long I've forgotten about the nasty message and find myself transported to a world where bands like The Sea and the Cake, Pavement, Tortoise and American Football rule the airwaves. I feel challenged but happy here and not the least bit angry. So I ask myself, why has this music turned Simon into a homicidal maniac? Could it be it's a little too cerebral for him? Could it be that his kegger-party brain couldn't handle the jump from Hotel California to interesting, intelligent pop? Come to think of it he was a huge Eagles fan in high school and, god knows, Don Henley and the boys can make even the sanest person feel a little off balance.
