If you’re like me and thought that the only thing Rochester New York had to offer the world was the Greece Town Mall, crack houses and Doppler radar, well you’d be wrong. Once again, from the home of Carvel Ice Creams Coockie Puss comes The Gifted Children with a brand new CD so full of tasty pop nuggets that I find myself going bulimic with repeated returns to their sonic buffet. These guys are masters of the “lo-fi” psychedelic pop sound that I am so very fond of and they have found a treasured spot next to my Neutral Milk Hotel and Apples in Stereo CDs. The writing on Chinese Food Takeover is simple and catchy but quirky enough to not become predictable. The use of a basement and an 8 track to record makes for an intimacy all to often lost when bands enter “real” studios and with each new release the boys hone their craft and become more and more adept at getting the sound they want. It is to bad that the Gifted Children’s music is so hard to come by in our neck of the woods but if you have a computer you can check them out at www.thegiftedchildren.com or write them at PO Box 92157, Rochester, NY, 14692
