There is something very Canadian sounding about the Weakerthans and I don’t mean Canadian in a Beachcombers/Max Webster kind of way. I think it could be the understated rock sound or the bleakness and sadness that underlies the music. Or it could be that I picture 4 guys sitting around in their concrete practice space sheltering themselves from a frosty Winnipeg evening, smoking cigarettes, drinking beer and writing songs. That’s not to say that Left and Leaving is a depressing CD. It’s catchy and poppy like the Flashing Lights or Thrush Hermit and there are some great lyrics. I have to admit I haven’t paid much attention to the nominees but this CD should definitely be up for a Juno in the “Really Good, Intelligent New Canadian Rock Band” category.
