The first time I saw treebeard live at Ottawa's venerable Barrymore's Music Hall, I wondered where they had been all my life. As I progressed from track to track listening to this CD, I actually started to get chills. I felt overcome by one of those almost indescribable feelings of being in the presence of something truly special. Production clean enough to be clear yet lo-fi enough to have character, vocals on the brink without actually falling over, consistently creative guitar work and a enough atonal notes and off-kilter chords to keep things from getting too predictable. Melodies that stick in your head without becoming annoying. If you like the intensity of Superchunk or Fluf, the quirky guitar noodlings of Pavement or The Pixies, the pop-punk sensibilities of Husker Du and the Foo Fighters, suffice it to say this CD is a must in your collection. Though released in 1998 this CD is a timeless and clear indication of some brilliant workings under the hood of the treebeard machine.
