Punchbuggy Wins Born on the WWW ContestThe e-votes are in and local power pop act Punchbuggy is the Internet's favourite rock band.
Following an eight week on-line talent search called Born on the World Wide Web -- during which thousands of bands in five genres uploaded their songs as MP3 files so that web surfers could listen and vote -- Punchbuggy got the call that their song One More Thing had won the grand prize.
"It's awesome," drummer Adam Luedicke said yesterday. "I thought we had a pretty good shot but I was really, really surprised.
"You don't think about what it'll be like if you actually win."
Well, they will soon find out. After beating the other seven finalists, Punchbuggy walks away with $25,000 US to make a new record as well as more than $10,000 in music gear.
The recording labels which participated in the contest -- such as Atlantic -- also have the option of buying and signing the band to a record deal.
Punchbuggy will also be leaving Monday for Hollywood to receive an award and perform live at the ARTISTdirect music awards Oct. 7, alongside such luminaries as No Doubt, Offspring and Chris Isaac, for the first-ever on-line only awards show.
As for whether this will finally be the ticket to rock stardom for the talented but under-appreciated band, Luedicke refuses to say.
"I don't want to make a prediction and jinx it." (from www.Canoe.ca) Punchbuggy1.com
